A DRIVER had a lucky escape when his car flipped over and landed on its roof after it is is believed he lost consciousness at the wheel.

The car, a blue Volkswagen Golf TDI, was thrown onto its roof during the smash in Malvern Road, St John's, Worcester near the BP garage on the roundabout.

The casualty could be seen being treated in an ambulance when your Worcester News arrived. The windscreen of the car had been smashed on impact and police with cars and blue lights running coned off the road near the entrance to the garage, stopping cars gaining access to Malvern from the roundabout. Other officers stopped traffic coming from the opposite direction which were directed to turn around in a side road. It is also believed off-duty paramedics stopped to help the casualty while others gathered at the scene to observe or see if they could offer help.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said: "We were called at 1.30pm today to Malvern Road, Worcester to a one vehicle road traffic collision where the car overturned. A male driver, 43 years old, is believed to have lost consciousness at the wheel. The driver was conscious and breathing after the incident. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening. The vehicle was a blue VW Golf. "

A spokesman for the West Midlands Ambulance Service said they received a call at 1pm about an overturned car and dispatched an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle to the scene.

He said: "There are no details of any injuries which usually means they are minor." He was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester.

West Mercia Police is appealing for witnesses to the crash. Those with information can call police on 101, quoting incident number 0287S 190814.
