DESPITE the typically British weather the August bank holiday still went off with a bang in Worcestershire.

The 12th annual Worcester Festival ended in spectacular fashion with a colourful free fireworks display at the South Quay yesterday evening, while music lovers braved the rain to enjoy Upton’s three-day Sunshine Music Festival.

Among the acts at the family event – now in its fifth year – were teen rappers Bars and Melody of Britain’s Got Talent fame, disco legends Boney M and 70’s pop stars Showaddywaddy.

Visitors to the South Quay on Sunday enjoyed an arts market while over in the next county the three-day Flavours of Herefordshire Festival was a roaring success.

Meanwhile Worcester’s 12th-century Commandery in Sidbury gave visitors of taste of what life would have been like during the Civil War on Bank Holiday Monday.

Visitors got to view demonstrations as well as try their hand at training drills and other activities, including nine-year-old Ben Sears, who got the chance to use his commanding voice to order around a fiveman cannon crew.

“My favourite bit was where I got to put the powder in,” he said. “And I loved bossing everyone around.”

Staff member David Nash was on hand as a Royalist gun captain, showing off a bronze cannon dating back to 1628 which it is thought was used during the Battle of Worcester.

“People have seemed to enjoy it,” he said.

But it looks like the summer might be over with forecasters predicting a rather soggy week.

Although today is predicted to be dryer than yesterday, with rain clearing throughout the day, the rest of the week is set to be miserable.

After what is expected to be a generally dry, if windy, Wednesday, the Met Office is predicting showers will return in the evening and continue throughout Thursday and Friday.

Although temperatures may hit 20 degrees on Thursday, it is unlikely to feel any warmer than 15 degrees as a result of the wind and rain and it could feel as chilly as nine degrees on Wednesday afternoon.

But although a severe weather warning was in place for heavy rain across the Midlands and the south of England throughout Monday, the Met Office has issued no warnings for the remainder of the week and the Environment Agency is not predicting any risk of flooding.

Looking forward to the weekend, the Met Office is predicting rain will continue with next week getting off to an unsettled start but we may get some sun later in the week.
