Vintage bikes to take to the road in Malvern once again

PENNY farthings, old Raleighs and other antique bicycles will be out again for a third time for the Elgar Vintage ride around Malvern.

The event, on Sunday, September 14, is being organised by Malvern Cycles in the Link, and this year will raise money for the local branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

There are 88 people with motor neurone disease in the area and the money raised by the ride will help to buy essential equipment or a carer, as well as helping to fund research into the disease.

Registration is now open, and Tanya Trotman of Malvern Cycles is hoping as many people as possible will sign up for the ride.

She said: “It’s an opportunity to raise money for our community and to have a unique day out with family and friends. Dress up in tweed or Victorian attire, and if you can ride the oldest bike you own, then that would be brilliant.”

The ride starts at 2pm at the Abbey Gateway. Riders will go through Priory Park, down to Poolbrook via St Andrews Road and Peachfield Road, down Guarlford Road and on to Malvern Link via Sherrards Green.

“The seven-mile ride will finish at Malvern Cycles where there will be a pig roast and prizes will be awarded. Those who don’t wish to take part in the ride can come down and join in on the pig roast from 3pm onwards.”

“Our first Elgar Vintage Ride enjoyed the support of more than 100 participants and even though we had bad weather last year, we had over 70 taking part, so this year we open to continue this success.”

There will be prizes for best-decorated bike and best-dressed male and female, judged by Isis Boutique owner Gill Campbell and staff of Francis of Malvern.

Registration fees are adults £6, retired £4, and children £3. For more information visit or call into the shop to pick up a form.
