EVESHAM Ambulance Station will be relocating to a new site in Abbey Lane next week.

West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed they will be moving on Tuesday, September 23, into the new community ambulance station.

They said the service delivered would remain the same with one full time ambulance and rapid response vehicle based at the site.

It has been known the relocation would take place since the station was placed on the market in January last year with a price tag of £600,000 - although it is not known what the site sold for.

The move comes after plans to turn the current site in Davies Road into a care home were approved at appeal, a decision that one councillor said has "let Evesham down".

The corner site on the junction of Davies Road with Cheltenham Road is now set to become a 63 bed care home with associated facilities.

These plans by Restful Homes Developments were originally rejected by Wychavon District Council's planning committee but an appeal went in favour of the applicant in July.

Further plans, including some slight amendments, appeared again in front of the committee last week.

Councillor Jo Sandalls said the new plan was a slight improvement but added the 21 parking spaces to be developed was not enough.

"This amended plan is only different in design, which is slightly better," said Cllr Sandalls.

"I wasn't comfortable with a care home on the corners of this busy junctions and the impact this size of building will have on the residents of Cheltenham Road.

"Reluctantly I have to go with the officers and inspectors advice and propose approval."

But not all members felt the same way, Cllr Reg Jakeman added: "I still cannot support this one but I won't go against it because of the appeal. I feel that the inspector has let Evesham down, this building is inappropriate.

"I think this is slightly better than the older one but if this was a new application without the appeal I would certainly go for refusal."

Cllr Keith Wright summed up the mood of the chamber saying: "I am not keen on this one but I won't go against the recommendation."
