AFTER weeks of cycling events in Evesham and the arrival of the Tour of Britain in the county the theme continued this weekend in the town as Cyclefest's second event Pedal Power took place.

Aimed at families and in aid of the Bell Tower Appeal the day was well attended with a wide range of activities going on.

Organiser, Fran Webb, made sure there was something for everyone, with children making light work of the climbing wall and legend of Ironman and Powerman Duathlon competition, Michelle Parsons, gave two inspirational talks during the day.

One of the highlights was the success of the family one, a 20 mile circular route to Pershore and back that was devised by Evesham resident Colin Tether.

Bell Tower Appeal and Cyclefest Committee chair, Sue Ablett, was delighted with the response.

She said: "We ended up with a great total of 69 riders taking part.

"This wasn’t a race, it was about enjoying the ride. But the real stars were the young children who took part.

"The youngest cyclist to complete the ride unaided was James Webster, at just 6 and a half. His parents are keen long distance cyclists, and grandfather John was the inspiration behind Evesham’s first Cyclefest, so watch out for James in years to come."

Another person who was left with a smile on their face after Cyclefest was Tricia Smith, from Evesham, who won a bike generously donated by Halfords and raffled on their stall.

But it did present something of a problem for the winner, who is a confirmed tricycle rider.

She said: "If I got on a two-wheeler, I would go straight over the other side. I have no balance."

So the bike has been donated to the Bell Tower Appeal for it to be auctioned to raise further funds for the Appeal.

Craig Banyard, deputy manager at Halfords, said he was delighted to offer the bike as a raffle prize and thrilled to know that, through an auction, it would raise even more funds for the Bell Tower Appeal. The bike, an Apollo Phaze 20 inch mountain bike, is valued at £199.

To bid send the amount you would like to enter to Cyclefest Bike Auction, Church House, Market Square, Evesham by 5pm on Friday, October 10.
