FAMILY activity sessions for children which aim to put the fun back into fitness and fight the obesity epidemic have been launched at Malvern Cube.

Malvern Hills Fitness Club sessions, delivered by a fully qualified fitness instructor, will begin at the venue in the town's Albert Road North on Monday, September 29.

The sessions, which incorporate exercises and active games suitable for five year olds upwards, are designed to improve endurance, strength and flexibility.

Sessions on Monday, September 29 (4-5pm), Tuesday, September 30 (4-5pm) and Thursday, October 2 (5-6pm) are free. These three 'tasters' will allow people to find out if the workouts are suitable for them without them making a financial commitment.

From Monday, October 6, drop-in sessions are £5 per adult (including one free child) and £3 for each additional child. A discounted rate is also available for people who block book.

Lucas North, who runs the sessions, felt it was time more families exercised together.

He said: "As recently as last month the media was reporting that health leaders were calling for an emergency taskforce to be set up to tackle childhood obesity in England.

"It's very sad that we've reached this incredible situation. I know I'm not the only parent who loves keeping active with their own kids. Seeing their parents exercise is encouraging, and keeps kids away from computer screens for an hour. More than anything I want them to enjoy the sessions. They're a bit of fun."

The sessions are being held on the wooden floor in Malvern Cube's main hall. People are asked to arrive ready for exercise and to bring along their own yoga mat (or similar) if they prefer.

Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
