THE countdown is on to the Battle of Evesham's 750th anniversary event and organisers are calling on local people, community groups and businesses to get involved.

The major historical battle re-enactment is now less than a year away and is set to take place on August 8 and 9 in and around Evesham.

The event will be accompanied by a host of commemorative events and school and community activities, culminating in a two-day medieval festival spread across the town.

The original battle took place on August 4, 1265, between the 6th Earl of Leicester, Simon de Montfort and Prince Edward, and was a significant period in English history.

Antonia Coles, event organiser, said: "The Battle of Evesham and Simon de Montfort’s life and achievements will be commemorated over the coming year concluding in a major re-enactment of his last battle beside the River Avon, Evesham."

During the second battle in what became known as the Barons War, Barons’ leader Simon de Montfort fought to limit the power of the King, establishing the first recognisable form of parliament in British history.

The anniversary celebrations was officially launched in July at All Saints Parish Church, Evesham.

"We’re now inviting local people and community groups to get involved," added Ms Coles.

"There are also a range of sponsorship opportunities available to businesses. The Battle of Evesham 2015 festival will bring together the townspeople to celebrate a hugely important period in our history."
