A CAMPAIGNER turned fundraiser earned a few wolf whistles by dressing as a female nurse, raising £500 to help turn the tide against cancer.

Ron Chambers, known for his campaigning work on behalf of pensioners ditched his placards for a pink wig, a skirt, tights and a trowel-loud of luminous lipstick, at the World's Biggest Coffee Morning for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Mr Chambers of Barbourne, Worcester, who is chairman of the Worcestershire Pensioners Action Group said the money was raised through selling coffees, cakes and through a tombola and raffle at St Andrew's Methodist Church in Pump Street, Worcester on Friday between 10am and 2pm.

Mr Chambers, who has just totalled up the funds, said: "I wasn't expecting to raise that much - no way. If I had made £150 I would have been happy. It wasn't how many people turned up - it was how generous they were."

He said he could not have done it without help and would like to thank all those who gave their support and who gave so generously to the cause and also Worcestershire Pensioner's Action Group which provided the money for the donation to the church where the event was held. He said: "I want to say a big thank you to all the helpers. I walked around the town (dressed as a female nurse) and some of the comments were brilliant. When I delivered the raffle prize the person said 'I would rather see you in your nurse's uniform'. I can't remember the last time I had so many wolf whistles."

Donations for Macmillan can be sent to Mr Chambers at 2A St George's Walk, Barbourne, Worcester, WR1 1QY.
