"We do recognise that many people will holding their own parties and we want to remind them of some simple safety tips to help avoid injury or damage.”

Firework safety tips include: buy fireworks from a reputable supplier; don’t drink if setting off fireworks; keep them in a closed metal box, take them out one at a time and always follow instructions carefully.

Light at arm’s length and stand well back, never go back once they are lit, never throw fireworks and don’t put them in your pocket.

Always supervise children, don’t let off fireworks late at night and keep pets indoors.

For a safe bonfire, build it well clear of buildings, fences and hedges. Before lighting, check there are no children or animals inside and that hazardous items such as aerosols and fireworks have not been thrown onto it. Never use a flammable substance to get it going.
