A CREW of dragon boaters from Pershore were forced to turn a practice session into a rescue mission when they discovered a stranded sheep trapped close to the river.

The Pershore Greyhounds Dragon Boat Group were paddling along the River Avon from Upton to Tewkesbury when they spotted the animal, which had become trapped close to the river down the embankment.

The boaters were accompanied by the safety boat from Mercia Inshore Rescue and stood by while the sheep was rescued by the safety boat lead by Dave Walker.

Keith Burton, one of the boaters, said: "The incident happened close to Tewkesbury close to the confluence with the Severn and Avon.

"Having been transferred to firmer ground the sheep scampered off apparently none the worse for ware."
