FANS of Worcester City have snapped up nearly 1,000 tickets for the FA Cup clash at Scunthorpe United despite them not yet being on general sale.

The Blue and Whites were initially given 1,600 tickets by the League One outfit for the second round tie on Sunday, December 7, but have requested another 500 due to demand.

It will take City’s allocation at Glanford Park close to 2,200 for the hotly-anticipated match, which will also be shown as part of a BBC FA Cup highlights package.

Each season-ticket holder was able to buy two cup tickets at City’s Conference North match against Leamington at Aggborough on Saturday.

The other supporters at the game, which the hosts won 2-1, could buy one via a voucher system.

Both groups have until 5pm today to redeem their tickets at the Tourist Information Centre next to the Guildhall before they go on offer to the public tomorrow.

City company secretary John Jordan said: “It again demonstrates that there is an appetite with fans for a club in the city.

“We had 850 supporters at Aggborough on Saturday who had travelled 17 miles down the road to watch the team.

“If the club was still in Worcester we would be getting four-figure gates without a doubt.

“If you have got a successful club it just shows what the potential is and there can’t be many non-league clubs that can do that.”

City’s cup adventure continues to capture the imagination of Worcester football fans after an incredible 3,220 roared them to victory against Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena earlier this month.

Teams in the Worcester and District League have again cancelled their Sunday fixtures to make the trip to Scunthorpe.

Twenty-four sides were given permission to call off matches to follow Carl Heeley’s men against Coventry and 10 have asked this time.

League rules allow clubs to move fixtures with six weeks notice but the league have made City’s cup run a special case.

Secretary Tim Phillips said: “We want to give Worcester City as much support as possible. It’s been 10 years since this happened and it may be another 10 years until it happens again.

“We will allow those clubs to close the date without the six weeks notice.”

Matches missed by the teams will be rearranged for later in the season.

City will again be running coach travel to Scunthorpe following the success of the scheme in the last round.

Seats cost £20 for adults and £12 for under 16s, with coaches departing from Croft Road car park between 8.45am and 9am on the day of the game.
