A SOGGY dog was rescued from a stream by firefighters after he slid down a steep bank.

Edward, 10, was rescued when he struggled to climb up a bank near Monnow Close, Droitwich at around 12.25pm today. Station commander Phil Griffiths said: "The owner of the dog was out walking him when the dog got into difficulties. He went to the aid of his faithful friend with a neighbour, a member of the public who happened to be in the area at the time. They weren't able to help the dog up the bank and the fire service were called."

Two boat crews were called, one from Worcester and one from Droitwich. A fire engine from Droitwich also attended. When firefighters arrived they found the boats were not needed but were able to pull Edward to safety in a scoop stretcher which was pulled up a ladder.

Mr Griffiths said: "He did everything he was told and sat there with the towel around him. He was cold and wet and a little bit uncomfortable because he had been in the stream for a while. He was taken to the vets for a check up." He said although Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service helped animals including rescuing dogs from badger setts and rabbit holes this type of rescue did not happen frequently.

The rescue was complete by 1.15pm.
