WORCESTER City bowed out of the FA Cup in the cruellest of fashions as Scunthorpe United edged them 14-13 on penalties in a second-round replay that will go down in football history.

The shoot-out saw 27 of the 32 kicks scored, including by each keeper, to create a new record for the competition outside of the qualifying rounds.

Nathan Vaughan also twice saved his side from defeat, thwarting Miguel Llera and Matthew Sparrow when successful spot kicks would have taken the visitors through.

In the end, it was Wayne Thomas who missed the crucial kick at 13-13, after Nick Wright and Danny Jackman had also been denied earlier in the sudden death lottery, and Llera sent Scunthorpe through to third round.

It was a pulsating night of drama watched by nearly 4,500 fans at Aggborough, the vast majority of which were bedecked in blue and white and sang themselves hoarse for 120 minutes and beyond.

Carl Heeley's side were giving a rousing ovation at the end and supporters will hope that, once the disappointment has subsided, this will go on to be a season to remember.

During normal time, just as in the original tie at Glanford Park, when Paddy Madden scored after Vaughan had pushed a free-kick against the bar, the woodwork betrayed City again.

This time, captain Ellis Deeney unluckily deflected the ball in off the bar in first-half stoppage time.

But, as also in the original tie, City hit back after the break with Sean Geddes bagging his fifth goal in the FA Cup in the 69th minute to eventually force extra time.

City dominated the first period, with George Williams firing wide and substitute Tristan Dunkley having penalty appeals waved away when he appeared to be shoved in the back.

Scunthorpe sub Hakeeb Adelakun also wasted a gilt edged opportunity, firing wide with the goal gaping.

Earlier, it needed Tyler Weir to hack Neal Bishop's header off the line and prevent Madden from forcing the loose ball home.

Vaughan twice saved from Lyle Taylor, on one occasion doing so with his feet.

Daniel Nti spurned a glorious opportunity in the 25th minute when, after George Williams had crossed into the area, the striker crashed a shot into the side netting.

A fiesty encounter looked to be heading into the break goalless, until the hosts were dealt a cruel blow.

A corner kick, with the one minute of stoppage time already played, was floated in by Gary McSheffrey, Madden got his head to the ball but it hit Deeney and went in off the bar despite the best efforts of Vaughan.

City refused to buckle and, following some tidy build-up play, Worcester got their reward.

Jordan Murphy and Nti combined down the left, the ball broke to Geddes in the box and he slid it past Sam Slocombe into the bottom corner.

Aggborough erupted and City laid seige to the visitors' goal with the dangerous Murphy unleashing a rising drive which was tipped over by Slocombe.

Nti then sent an overhead kick straight down the throat of Slocombe as City piled forward but they had to settle for extra time.

Then it was penalties and, although not the outcome many felt they deserved, few will forget what they witnessed last night.
