THE hunt is being launched for Worcester's most inspiring people - with a major awards bash being staged to salute them.

The Mayor of Worcester Councillor Alan Amos has teamed up with city rotarians to launch the first ever 'Best of Worcester Community Awards'.

A glittering black-tie bash will take place at the Guildhall in March aimed at rewarding people or organisations that make a difference - whether it be helping the unemployed find work, boosting goodwill in a neighbourhood, or anything else to benefit the city's residents.

During the event, from 6.45pm on Friday, March 20, the Guildhall is expected to be packed to the rafters, with seven different categories involved.

On the night there will be a three-course dinner, live music from Worcester band Cocktail Hour, an auction, raffle, tombola, and one of the UK's most talented caricatures Mick Wright, based in Leicestershire, will be on hand to draw impressive sketches of the guests.

Sponsored by the National Lottery, the bash is an alternative version of the mayor's annual charity dinner.

Cllr Amos, who Mr Wright has already drawn a sketch of, said: "It will be a wonderful event and we want to see as many nominations as possible - it really is open to everyone and is all about celebrating Worcester's people, those who deserve recognition for making a difference."

Terry Reed, acting president of Worcester Rotary Club, said: "It's events like this that bring people together and we are fully behind it."

The seven categories are:

- The person or organisation who has done the most to improve the lives of vulnerable people in Worcester

- The individual or organisation offering the most imaginative training and support to get people back to work

- The person or organisation who has done the most to boost community spirit and goodwill in their neighbourhood

- The school, youth centre or youth group which has done the most to involve their local community

- The business or enterprise with a social agenda that has benefitted the people of Worcester

- A community based team or organisation that has gone the extra mile to help local people

- The Mayor's special award to a person or organisation who has worked tirelessly to help the city of Worcester

In each category there will be awards for first, second and third place on the night, apart from the Mayor's Special Award.

To make a nomination, visit www.worcester.gov.uk/communityawards and fill out the form by 5pm on Monday, February 16.

The forms can also be posted to the Guildhall, in Worcester High Street for the attention of the Mayor.
