THE village school of Pebworth has hosted a special community lunch this week welcoming people from the village to enjoy food prepared and served by the pupils.

People from Pebworth, who support the school, past and present came along to the lunch where the Year 5 pupils served up the food the school children had created.

The keen youngsters have first hand experience of growing, harvesting and preparing food and produced delicious dishes with a zero food mile tariff.

"Each class prepared a different part of the meal," said Tracey Lamb, school volunteer and leader of the school garden initiative.

Guest John Kyte told children: "In my day, you boys would have done the gardening and the girls would have cooked and cleared up. These days you all do it all."

The menu was described by Anna, one of the Year 5 leaders. She said: "We served leek and potato soup, onion tart with butternut squash scones, lettuce and spring onions."

"The meal was completed by upside down apple cake made with the last of our autumn crop of apples, delicious," agreed pupils Faye and Robbie.

Impressed guests included several villagers who were educated at Pebworth School during the !930s, 40s and 50s. Following the meal, guests were offered a short tour of the school, to remind them of how things have changed since their time at the school. All guests agreed that Pebworth grown food should be at the top of the menu!
