Tottenham cruiserweight Chris Henry was carried out of the ring on a stretcher after losing his Southern Area title to Havering's Dominic Negus at the Grundy Park Leisure Centre, Cheshunt, last night. He eventually had surgery and was taken into intensive care.

Henry, tended in the ring for some 10 minutes by doctors and para-medics, was taken to Oldchurch Hospital in Romford following the punishing fight.

Neurological units at the Royal Free Hospital in North London and the London Hospital in White-chapel were alerted.

It had been an exhausting encounter, but Negus suddenly found a surge in the tenth round to catch Henry with a combination which sent him crashing into the ropes - and referee Tony Walker immediately halted the bout.

The stoppage looked spot-on but as Negus celebrated, Henry suddenly toppled over in the middle of the ring to bring the medical services into operation.
