ROSEMARY Long tells us that ''housing associations are A Good Thing''.

In Strathbungo and surrounding areas, there are many beautiful, even grand, Victorian and Edwardian houses - Glasgow's classic domestic architecture at its best. In past years, several have been acquired by housing associations. Look at some of them now. Elaborate cornices and ceiling roses removed; fine fireplaces ripped out; spacious drawing-rooms partitioned with crude lobbies and corridors; doors and banisters panelled; and dry rot allowed to set in.

And these are the professionals. Planning departments seem unable to stop them, because it all happens behind a preserved facade. Can nothing be done to put an end to this vandalism stalking under the cloak of benevolence?
