John sutton has admitted the lure of European football was a major factor in his decision to return to Scotland and join Motherwell.

The former Dundee, Raith and St Mirren striker was a target for the Fir Park club last year, before Mark McGhee arrived as manager, but instead joined Wycombe Wanderers.

However, the departure of Paul Lambert from the Coca-Cola League two club, left the 24-year-old searching for a move, and McGhee - eager to bolster his attacking options - moved to complete a deal.

"I am looking forward to getting back playing in the SPL" said Sutton, who has been given the No.11 shirt and has signed a three-year contract. "I've always enjoyed my spells in Scotland and have usually done not too bad. The teams I've played with have always tried to play good football and Motherwell are no different. The SPL is a great league with every week being a real test.

The Fir Park club will hope a slow start to the Clydesdale Bank Premier League season does not impinge on their chances in the UEFA Cup, with the first round looming later this month.

"Europe is massive for us," said Sutton, who will complete his move today subject to international clearance and registration formalities. "As I understand it, if we win one tie we'll be in the group stages and could play against some massive clubs so I am really looking forward to that.

"Motherwell, to a extent, were the surprise team last year and to finish third was a hell of an achievement. I want to come here, score goals, and help us get there again."
