ABOUT the closure of Craig-en-Ros residential home, Millport, Cumbrae, I must, on North Ayrshire Council's behalf, correct several assertions made by its owner (January 9). Far from showing a blatant disregard for the residents in Craig-en-Ros, the council is paying for the care of nine out of the 10 current residents. So much for the claim that the council has no funding to support the home.

We have been in touch with the owner and with our partners in other agencies, in particular NHS Ayrshire and Arran, about the future care of the current residents. We will continue to meet their care needs irrespective of what happens in the future.

The key issue is that the demand for residential care on Cumbrae is not sufficient to sustain the business to the owner's satisfaction. To put the problem into perspective, of the 363 people whom North Ayrshire has assisted with care-home admission over the past two years, only three came from Cumbrae. Two required nursing care and, as Craig-en-Ros is not registered to provide this, they were moved to the mainland. The other was admitted to Craig-en-Ros.

We remain committed to providing the best care for all residents of Craigen-Ros. We will carry out individual assessments of their needs and we will try our utmost, with our partners, to provide a level of care that meets their individual needs. The decision to close Crag-en-Ros was not based on a budget decision by the council but on a business decision by the owner.
