EDINBURGH AC retained their Panasonic Scottish men's league athletics

title after the final match at Crownpoint in Glasgow yesterday. They won

the match with 23 points to spare over Shettleston, who finished second

on the day and also second overall.

Scottish international Gary Brown set a league record when he won the

800 metres in 1min. 48.0sec. to beat the previous best, set 10 years ago

by Nat Muir, by two seconds. He later won the 1500m in 3-48.04. David

Barnetson (Inverness) also set a league record when he won the high jump

with a clearance of 2.12m.

There was a division two record for Dundee Hawkhill's John Mackenzie,

who won the triple jump with a leap of 15.59m.

Inverness and Cambuslang were relegated from the first division, and

East Kilbride and Clydesdale, for the first time, are promoted from the

* SCOTTISH youngsters, who won 18 medals at the AAA age group

championships at Birmingham the previous weekend, continued their run of

successes at the Celtic Games at Camarthen on Saturday.

The team won all four age-group categories in the match and recorded

convincing wins in both the boys' and girls' matches, with victories in

24 of the 48 events staged during the afternoon.

Of the 10 records set by Scots, nine came in the boys' match.

Three came in the field events, with Martin Pate winning the high jump

with 2.00m, Bruce Robb the shot with a throw of 15.58, and Peter Fraser

throwing the javelin 54.62.

The under-15 sprinters, led by record-breaking Andrew Lees (100m in

11.54sec) and Julian Love (220m in 22.90), set a record of 44.52 seconds

4X100 relay and the senior boys' under-17 team set another record of

42.82.

Suzanne McGowan from Motherwell was the only record-breaker in the

girls' event, running the 300m in 40.02. Results:
