PUPILS at Offenham First School in Evesham donned hard hats and high visibility jackets to go exploring at a new housing development being built in the village.

The year one and two pupils were invited to the Barratt Homes West Midlands the Orchards development on Offenham Road to learn all about new homes and the hidden dangers that exist on building sites.

Michael Brown, class teacher at Offenham First School, said: "The children thoroughly enjoyed their visit to The Orchards development.

"The excitement of observing the bulldozers in action and seeing the houses in their various stages of construction provided the ideal context for learning about the dangers of a building site.

"The children also enjoyed looking round the show home and seeing the finished product."

James Arrowsmith, site manager, gave the children the tour.

He said: "The purpose of visits like these is to teach children that a building site is not a playground and is in fact a very dangerous place.

"We walk around the site pointing out the obstacles and overhead dangers and encourage the children to interact and come up with different scenarios that may occur.

"We have some fun with the children, but the main aim of the day is to help keep them safe."
