BONFIRE night is being moved - to make way for Celtic's clash with Manchester United.

The massive fireworks display held on Glasgow Green will now take place a day later - on Thursday, November 6.

City bosses have decided to move the goalposts for the event, which has traditionally taken place on November 5, due to the Champions League match.

A capacity crowd of 60,000 is expected for the Celtic Park clash while more than 50,000 are predicted to turn out for the annual fireworks spectacular.

And police feared their resources would be stretched to the maximum if both East End events went ahead on the same night.

City leisure chiefs expressed concern that two major events would lead to traffic chaos and that there would not be enough officers to patrol the evening.

After crisis talks with Culture and Sport Glasgow, police have pushed back the Glasgow Green celebrations from the Wednesday until the Thursday night.

A spokesman for CSG said: "As soon as the Champions league draw was made we began speaking to the police and other partner agencies which help to organise the fireworks.

"Up to 50,000 people can attend the fireworks and with another 60,000 potentially going to Celtic Park for the Champions League tie against Manchester United the decision was taken to move the fireworks to November 6. "

The popular fireworks display was moved once before, in 2003, when Celtic played Belgian side Anderlecht.

A Strathclyde Police spokeswoman said: "Both events require the same support services of ambulance, first aid and police.

"When the Champions League fixture was announced the decision was taken by all partner agencies to move the fireworks to November 6 so that both evenings would be adequately covered.

"The safety of people attending both events is our priority."

A spokeswoman for Manchester United said: "We welcome the news that Glasgow's fireworks celebration has been moved.

"Fans will now not have to miss out on what is an important event in the Glasgow calendar and will also be able to attend what is sure to be an exciting match."

Celtic declined to comment.

Glasgow's firework displays are famous for setting Guy Fawkes celebrations off with a bang.

Between 50,000 and 90,000 turn out to Glasgow Green each year to see the spectacular bursts of colour light up landmarks such as the People's Palace.

Safety concerns also forced a change to last year's West Dunbartonshire Council's fireworks night.

Council chiefs were forced to make a last minute switch of venue for the annual celebration.

The change was made after fears the display would interfere with the flight path of planes at Glasgow Airport.

The town's annual show was planned in the shadow of the Titan Crane but was forced to move to Dalmuir Park after objections from National Air Traffic Services.

This year's spectacular, free Guy Fawkes Night event in Glasgow will now kick off on Glasgow Green on November 6 at 7.30pm.
