A TEENAGER died early today after falling from the roof of a swimming pool.

The 18-year-old plunged about 30ft after scrambling on to the roof of the building around midnight.

Emergency services rushed to the Ayrshire pool and the area was sealed off as paramedics battled for the youngster's life.

However, they couldn't save him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation is now under way into the accident.

A police spokesman said today: "We can confirm that an 18-year-old has died after falling from a roof at Girvan Swimming Pool.

"Investigations are under way to find out what happened, but it is not believed to be suspicious."

Ambulance crews were called to Knockcushan Street near the town's harbour after a friend of the youngster raised the alarm.

A spokeswoman for South Ayrshire Council, which runs the facility, said: "Our thoughts are with the family of the young man who died. Our Health and Safety officers are aware of the incident and the pool is closed while investigations are carried out.

"It will re-open again as soon as possible."

Locals were today stunned by the tragedy. Girvan harbour master Roddy Leitch said: "I had finished up my rounds late last night, and there was nothing untoward then.

"It is very sad that something like this happened, and in a town of this size it will affect the community. Our thoughts go out to the family.

"Youngsters sometimes climb up on to the roof, and the swimming pool area can't be much more than 20 to 30ft."
