CULTURE bosses are celebrating after welcoming the five millionth visitor to the new-look Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

The Glasgow attraction has seen a surge in popularity since its £35million refurbishment two years ago.

Exhibitions such as a display featuring pop star Kylie Minogue's outfits and photography by Glasgow's Harry Benson have reeled in art-loving Glaswegians and tourists.

Last year, the exhibition of stage clothes worn by the pop princess, including the gold hotpants worn in video Spinning Around, attracted 165,000 fans in just four months.

And Harry Benson's exhibition of 100 photographs, including one of heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ail in training for a title fight, is proving to be a huge crowd-pleaser.

Bailie Liz Cameron, chairwoman of Culture and Sport Glasgow which runs the museum, said: "This is a magnificent achievement which once again reinforces the enduring appeal of Kelvingrove.

"Visitors have flocked to see old favourites such as Sir Roger the Elephant and Salvador Dali's iconic Christ of St John of the Cross. Many come back time and again."

The museum, which is entirely funded by council tax payers, is the fifth most visited museum in the UK.

It was also named as the world's 14th most visited museum last year, ahead of attractions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

And Kelvingrove was last year voted the top tourist attraction in Scotland with 2,232,475 people through its doors in the first full year of reopening.

It beat Edinburgh Castle, which drew 1.2m visitors and the National Galleries of Scotland with just 841,849. Around 5000 people every day make the trip to the iconic building.

Councillor Archie Graham, Glasgow City Council's executive member for Culture and Sport, said: "This is a spectacular success for Glasgow and an overwhelming endorsement of the work done in Kelvingrove."
