THE public have spoken over proposals for a new Worcester City FC stadium - and have delivered a rallying cry of "Bring City Home".

Today we can reveal that a Worcester City Council public consultation over the controversial 4,100 capacity ground for Perdiswell led to an impressive 754 responses being handed in before Monday's deadline passed.

The overwhelming majority of comments are positive but it also includes around 100 objections with many citing concerns over traffic, parking, the loss of green space at Perdiswell park and even extra litter.

Now the city council's planning committee could make a decision as early as June depending on how quickly the officers can come to a view.

The final tally of comments includes a letter of support from the University of Worcester, which says the stadium bid has the potential to provide another sporting legacy.

The note from Mick Donovan, head of the institute of sport and exercise science, calls it "a much needed" development that would help the city.

It also says "clearly the city needs to host its own football club for a whole range of reasons", saying the bond between the club and university is very strong.

The feedback also shows how entrenched some of the views are, with backers writing in to call it "fantastic" and "just superb Worcester", but objectors living locally saying they will be "inundated" with supporters, labelling it a"great concern".

Rob Crean, secretary of Worcester City's Supporters Trust, which has produced the proposals, urged the council to take its time in forming its view.

"Obviously it's great to have those comments from the university, it's really good they are supportive of it," he said.

"The fact it's got so many responses is great, we knew it would be a good talking point and the debate will keep going.

"We are aware (of the council target date of June) but they can take all the time they need, if they take longer than that and come up with a robust view, that's what we want."

Yesterday the city council took the unusual step of saying comments submitted after the deadline will still be given consideration, despite the closing date having expired.

People can still submit comments by visiting worcester.go.uk and searching for planning application P14M0176.

City has been without a ground of its own since leaving St George’s Lane, the team’s home for 108 years, in 2013 and is in exile at Kidderminster Harriers' Aggborough stadium.

That arrangement will continue next season, it was recently announced.
