WORCESTER City joint manager Carl Heeley believes captain Ellis Deeney is more than worthy of his playerof- the-season accolades.

The 23-year-old midfielder capped a fine campaign by being named the top player by supporters, teammates and the club’s main sponsor M Pinches.

Deeney scooped around 45 per cent of the fans’ vote ahead of Sean Geddes, Mike Symons and Tyler Weir.

The former Aston Villa youth team captain, who has been with the Conference North club since January 2012, is highly regarded by the Blue and Whites.

City first deployed him as a leftback but moved him into central midfield following Tom Thorley’s departure to Hednesford Town in November 2013.

Heeley, who this week became joint manager along with Matt Gardiner, his assistant of four years, also revealed that Deeney had no hesitation in committing to the club when they entered into exile at Aggborough.

He said: “Ellis has developed as a player and person in the years we have had him and there is a lot of affection for him.

“When we left St George’s Lane he was the first one to nail his colours to the mast. I would like to think we have stood by the lad and helped with his development.

“He’s been immense for us this season and I am sure he will improve further.”

Deeney played in 49 of City’s 53 fixtures during the 2014-15 campaign, scoring three goals, two of which came in their famous FA Cup run.

In total, he has made 154 appearances for the club, including 51 in the 2013-14 season, and scored five goals.

Being named player-of-the-season comes at the same time as his older brother Troy captaining Watford to promotion to the Premier League.

The striker, who has scored 21 goals this season, is also the only Hornets player to be included in the Professional Footballers’ Association Championship team of the year.
