THE mayor of Worcester learned about how people can delve into the roots of their family tree at a family history centre.

Cllr Alan Amos visited the family history centre at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Canada Way, Lower Wick, Worcester.

Open says were held on Thursday, April 30 and Saturday, May 1. A variety of tools are available there to help people research their family history, including access to Ancestry.com, My Heritage, Find My past and Family search.

The service is completely free of charge and help is available for those just starting their search.

However, the mayor, who visited on Thursday, already had a family member who had completed extensive research so he politely declined offers of help.

Marion McLaverty, a member of the church, said: "Finding out about our ancestors really brings a connection with the past as we learn of the type of people they were, their lifestyle and the challenges they had. It can also bring some fun surprises."

Indexing work is also taking place with opportunities to help for anyone who has time on their hands and a computer at home
