A SOUTH America adventure beckons an Evesham student who has been awarded a university scholarship to carry out a volunteering trip to Brazil later this year.

Sonia Harrison, who studies at the University of Worcester, will spend around a month in South America this summer, and has been awarded financial assistance by the University’s Scholarship Panel, which benefits students who undertake extra-curricular activities in areas such as sport, music and the arts, as well as volunteering projects.

Sonia, a Primary Initial Teacher Education student, will fly out to Brazil in order to volunteer in a newly-constructed school in one of the country’s many favelas.

“I will be helping to teach the children of the favela English, through the use of drama, art, dance and music,” she explained.

“I think that the trip will broaden my thinking and skills, to encompass children of diverse backgrounds and cultures. Seeing a different country, how their school system works and how it is valued will also be interesting and informative.”
