WORCESTER-BASED based blood cancer charity, Leukaemia CARE, has a new patron, from the top flights of the opera world

Beverley Worboys, a renowned leading soprano who grew up in Kidderminster, is hoping that her patronage will help raise awareness of the charity and blood cancers amongst new audiences.

She said: “Through my work, I’m fortunate to know many people across a variety of fields including the arts, science, politics and education and I look forward to bringing Leukaemia CARE to their attention. I hope there will be many opportunities to spread the word about Leukaemia CARE and hope to combine my event organising skills, as well as the help of some of my talented colleagues, to put on a world-class fundraising concert.

“The idea that some blood cancers can now be picked up by a simple blood test is hugely encouraging. Any awareness that I can raise in terms of recognising the symptoms is of great importance to me. Knowing what to look for is the first step and I want to bring this to as many people's attention as possible.

“I'm very excited to be taking on this responsibility and I consider it a great privilege to be asked to become a Patron."

The opera star with local roots has a personal reason for getting involved because she has lost several family members to cancer over the years.

Monica Izmajlowicz, Chief Executive at Leukaemia CARE, said: “We are thrilled Beverley is supporting the charity as our Patron. Awareness of blood cancers is crucial and it’s people like Beverley who can really help to drive that awareness forward.”

Originally born in Kidderminster, the singer now divides her time between her home in Bewdley, Worcestershire and family life in Basel, Switzerland with her husband and seven year old daughter.

As a leading soprano she is much in demand as a concert soloist and recording artist. She also has her hands full as she runs an international private vocal coaching studio in Basel and is Director of English Chamber Opera.
