TWO Malvern men have become record-breakers after completing a gruelling sailing and mountain-running challenge in the fastest time in the event's history.

Chris Lewis-Farley and Laurence Wilson were members of the five-strong Team Rio, which completed the 38th Three Peaks Yacht Race in 61 hours 24 minutes - a new course record.

The event started in Barmouth, Wales, and the journey involved 389 miles of demanding coastal sailing, whilst en route runners took to the shore to scale the highest peaks in Wales, England and Scotland.

Mr Lewis-Farley said: "I am elated and shattered. This was my first time entering this huge race and I am so pleased with the result, it was amazing how we all pulled together and worked so well as a team.

"After the second leg I was exhausted, and I had to recuperate on the yacht for a day and a half whilst it was being tossed around.

"We popped open the champagne as soon as we crossed the finish line to celebrate this massive achievement."

Mr Lewis-Farley is a a landscape officer at Malvern Hills District Council and Mr Wilson is a freelance production manager.
