POLICE will take no further action against the driver of a crop sprayer which smashed into Bidford Bridge causing extensive damage.

The crash caused part of the medieval bridge to crumble into the River Avon below and has led to it being closed off to vehicles for between four to six months while repair work takes place.

Sergeant Bob Shaw for Alcester South Safer Neighbourhood Team said: "Following an investigation into a collision which occurred on Bidford Bridge on June 9, it has been decided that no further action will be taken.

"It was a damage only road traffic collision, with no injuries, where the parties involved exchanged their details.

"The vehicle was under the weight limit and no other road or traffic offences have taken place in regards to the incident.

"There will be no further police involvement in this matter."

Warwickshire County Council, who is working with partner agencies to carry out the repair work, said it was working as quickly as it could on the complex job.

In its latest statement, it said: "We are doing our utmost to repair Bidford Bridge as soon as is feasible given the complex nature of the task.

"In the meantime we are acutely conscious of the daily inconvenience caused to Bidford residents, the surrounding area and the effect on local businesses whilst repairs are ongoing.

"We fully understand the wish for local businesses to recoup losses incurred through the closure of the bridge. "Whilst the county council is not able to issue legal advice to individuals or businesses directly, we are assisting them to identify sources of help."

It has published the insurance contact details of the vehicle which caused the damage at www.warwickshire.gov.uk/bidfordbridge under the heading Support.

"Those affected can approach the insurers to discuss whether an insurance claim may be possible in their particular circumstances.

Small businesses whose trade is affected, may qualify to have their rateable value reduced by The Valuation Office Agency until the bridge is repaired.

"If this is not viable they may be able to qualify for Stratford on Avon District Council’s Hardship Relief."

It has asked people to contact the Enterprise, Housing and Revenues Division on 01789 260993 for advice.
