GREEN-FINGERED volunteers are needed to help create a new community orchard in Droitwich.

The parks team at Wychavon District Council is seeking people to help transform a small area in St Peter’s Field. The land was previously an experimental forest garden used by local schools but the project ended earlier this year.

Now the team want to revive the site by planting a range of apples, pears, plums, quinces and medlars – a small, brown fruit similar to an apple - with as many Worcestershire varieties included as possible.

Volunteers, who do not necessarily need any experience, are required to help establish and maintain the orchard.

Lynn Stevens, parks officer at Wychavon District Council, said: “This is a great way to transform this part of St Peter’s Field and those who volunteer will not only have the opportunity to learn new things but will also benefit from harvesting and using the crop.

“I hope as many people as possible will support this project by getting involved.”

Wychavon District Council successfully set up a community orchard in Abbey Park in Pershore in 2010, which is still going strong today with support from six volunteers.

Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Emily Jeavons before the end of September by emailing emily.jeavons@wychavon.gov.uk or calling 01386 565457.
