AN EXHIBITION of artwork inspired by Pershore and the surrounding area is to go on show this month.

The month-long exhibition at Pershore Library in Church Street will begin on Monday, October 6 and will feature a range of paintings, photographs and drawings of the area.

It has been arranged by artist group Pershore Arts in partnership with Wychavon District Council and follows an exhibition focusing on the town’s Avon Meadows wetland last year, which proved extremely popular.

Pershore Arts chairman Frans Swarte said: “It became clear during the last exhibition that people would be interested in seeing a wider perspective of where we live and that there was an opportunity to promote the town not only as a great place to live, but also to indicate its importance as a local tourist attraction.

“We have a lot of talented local artists who have created artwork that offers a visual celebration of Pershore’s places and people.

“The finished work really demonstrates every aspect of living in and around a vibrant town.

“We have about 12 artists who have taken part in this project and they’ve created nearly 30 pieces of work that cover examples of architecture, events and beauty spots.”

Among the exhibits are a collection of photographs of shop workers and market traders in the town by Sue Farr, who said she was pleased to take part.

“Having signed up for this exhibition, I found myself at three in the morning wondering what on earth to submit,” she said.

“The notion of photographing people of Pershore came to me and the more I thought about it, the more appropriate and exciting it seemed.

“Shop workers and market traders were ideal subjects and I envisaged creating a visual tribute to the people who help keep the heart of the town ticking.”

Heritage manager at Wychavon District Council Jim Burgin said he was “really excited” to see the works on show.

“I hope the exhibition will encourage more people to visit the town and the surrounding areas so that they can see how much it has to offer,” he said.

The exhibition will run until Saturday, October 31.

Pershore Arts meets every Thursday from 7.30pm until 9.30pm at the St Andrew’s Centre in Church Street and also holds a number of events throughout the year.
