A SURGEON at a Droitwich hospital has called on women to be aware of the signs of breast cancer.

As part of this month’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, consultant breast surgeon at BMI Droitwich Spa Hospital Michelle Mullen has reminded women to carefully check for signs of the condition and speak to a doctor if they are concerned.

Her words came as new figures showed 85 per cent of women now live five years or longer after being diagnosed with breast cancer and 78 per cent live for 10 years or more. But 12,000 women in the UK still die of the disease every year.

She said: “Breast health is something that can so easily be overlooked but the recent statistics show that with increased awareness and through high-profile media campaigns we can influence the behaviour of women across the UK.

“We need to ensure that every woman knows how to carry out effective self-check procedures and, just as importantly, what to do if she thinks something is wrong.

“It is important to get an early appointment with a GP to discuss any worrying symptoms."

Signs of breast cancer include lumps, swelling or rashes.
