WORCESTERSHIRE County Council chairman Ian Hopwood is recovering after suffering a heart attack on Saturday.

The county's chief executive Clare Marchant said: "Cllr Hopwood suffered a mild heart attack on Saturday. He was admitted to Worcestershire Royal Infirmary where he is recovering well.

"Cllr Hopwood and his family would like to thank everyone for the many get-well messages he has received.

"Vice-chairman Cllr Tony Miller will be deputising for the chairman until he is fit and well enough to return to his duties."

At Tuesday evening's meeting of Malvern Town Council, of which Cllr Hopwood is also a member, fellow councillors voted for mayor Julian I'Anson to send a message of sympathy and a bouquet to him.

Member of the public Philip Rumney told council members that among the medical team looking after Cllr Hopwood was a nurse from Marianske Lazne, Malvern's twin town in the Czech Republic.
