TWO MPs in Worcestershire have sweated it out in parliament - but this time it wasn't any House of Commons debates getting them hot under the collar.

Robin Walker and Nigel Huddleston are backing this year's Poppy Appeal after cycling nearly four miles on a stationary bike.

This week a charity placed the bicycle in the heart of Westminster and asked as many MPs as possible to spend time using it, with all the cash raised going to the Royal British Legion.

Mr Huddleston, who represents Mid-Worcestershire, actually finished in fifth place from the scores of MPs to take part, while Worcester's Robin Walker came 20th narrowly behind House of Commons Speaker John Bercow.

The duo cycled 5.8 kilometres between them after each being challenged to go as far as they could go in 10 minutes.

Mr Walker said: "The Royal British Legion do a tremendous job supporting families across the country and I am always happy to do anything I can for the Poppy Appeal.

"I am very much looking forward to taking my place in Worcester's Remembrance Service on Sunday.

"Although I am not much of a cyclist, I was happy to do my bit in the support of such a fantastic cause."

Mr Huddleston added: "I must admit I was apprehensive going into today’s ride having heard talk of other MPs training for weeks - and some were clearly in it to win it.

"I was pleased to still be in the top 10 by late afternoon."

The event was organised by the Industry and Parliament Trust, a charity for Westminster.

Nick Maher, from the trust, said: "I am extremely grateful to everyone who took time out of their busy schedule to take part in the bike ride.

"The support we received from staff and members was fantastic and I know the money raised will go far in supporting those who need it most."

Mr Huddleston travelled 3.2 kilometres in the allocated time, giving him bragging rights over Mr Walker, who got to 2.6 kilometres.

* As we reported last month ex-servicemen and women have been invited to the Postal Order pub in Foregate Street, Worcester, tomorrow at 9am.

From there the veterans will make their way towards Worcester Cathedral for the two minutes silence, and will then parade through the High Street.

The Cathedral service will start at 10am, before an 11am Act of Remembrance at the war memorial.

Droitwich's annual parade will alight at the town's war memorial in Victoria Square tomorrow, with people asked to arrive there by 10.45am.
