A revamped forest school area will act as a wonderful tribute to a former volunteer at a Defford school.

The new seating area at the forest school area has been created at Defford-cum-Besford CE First School thanks to a generous donation from Shirley Searle in memory of her late father Bob Dyson.

Mr Dyson, who volunteered at the school, is fondly remembered for sharing his war memories with the children during his visits.

The School council therefore decided to spend the money on the seating area which will be used for story-telling.

Paul Groom, a former parent and talented artist, worked with the children to bring their ideas to life.

Andrea Bailey, the school's headteacher said: “We are pleased to be able to offer weekly forest school lessons to all pupils and this seating area and butterfly mural will be fantastic additions to our excellent learning provision, as noted in our recent Ofsted report.”

Vicki Whitehead, forest school leader said: “The children are stimulated by the outdoors, it increases self-belief, confidence, teaches them problem solving skills and enhances their emotional and physical well-being."

Mrs Searle and Mr Groom were among parents and community members welcomed to the school on Wednesday, November 18 for the official opening of the seating area.
