HUNDREDS of Evesham residents had fun in the sun at a new event celebrating the British Asparagus Festival.

More than 500 runners and spectators turned up for the inaugural Valley Asparagus Colour Run, held on Sunday, May 29.

Competitors of all ages took to The Valley's countryside and were covered in green powder paint, from the Asparagus green paint bombs that came raining down on competitors during the 5,000 kilometre course.

The event also featured a music and event commentator who created an excellent atmosphere for the event, celebrating the asparagus festival that runs until June 21.

Gus the Asparagus Man, who has been involved in the festival since 2009, also made an appearance at the event.

Maria Hughes, The Valley centre manager, said: "It was fantastic to see so many families all participating together.

"Asparagus is such an important part of the area and we were pleased to play a small part in the wider celebrations.

"Big thanks go to Visit Wychavon who supported the event, and to Vale Balloons for creating a fantastic Asparagus finishing arch."
