FIREFIGHTERS tackled a large fire in scrubland on the edge of the city.

A crew from Malvern battled he blaze at Bastonford near Powick after a call at around 2.35pm today (Wednesday).

They arrived to find a fire involving 50 square metres of scrubland and trees on fire.

The fire was not near any properties said watch commander Saul Bolton. However, he said the 'deep-seated' could have spread to a nearby field if it had not been contained quickly in the hot, dry conditions.

He said: "It was quite a big fire involving eight metre high conifers."

Residents living at the estate near the old Powick Hospital raised the alarm, calling 999.

He said early analysis suggested the fire had been caused by an overhead powerline which sparked in contact with conifers while the dry conditions helped the fire to spread.

Two tanks of water were used to put the fire out and dampen down the area.

The Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service also inspected a house in Sebright Avenue, Worcester, following a small explosion involving a gas barbecue after receiving a call at 4.08pm.
