A WORCESTERSHIRE man wants to alert locals about fake banknotes after withdrawing a counterfeit £20 note in Evesham.

Andrew Marsh, from North Littleton, said he received the fake note from a cash machine outside Tesco in Worcester Road on July 13.

Mr Marsh, 54, said: "I want to warn people to be vigilant because duff £20 notes are circulating in ATMs.

"I have lost that money and I'm pretty peeved that no one wants to take responsibility. No one gives a stuff."

A bank clerk at Lloyds in Alcester spotted the fake note when Mr Marsh tried to exchange it for change.

"He noticed the super whiteness of it. The note looked perfect to me and ordinarily I would not have checked it," he said.

Mr Marsh, who is self-employed, said the bank politely told him that they could do little to resolve the situation.

"Lloyds said I couldn't prove the note came from the ATM," he said.

"When you have a potential fraud on your credit card the banks get involved and immediately take an interest."

Mr Marsh said he was put on hold when he rang the Tesco customer service line to tell them about the incident.

A Lloyds Bank spokesman said: "Where we suspect that a forged note has been presented to us within a branch, we will send the suspected forgery to the issuing bank for investigation, which is standard industry practice."

The Lloyds branch in Alcester have sent the note to the Bank of England to confirm whether it is fake.

A Tesco Bank spokesman said: “We take customer complaints very seriously. We are investigating the matter further and will attempt to contact the customer to resolve this issue.”
