THERE were long tailbacks of traffic in Evesham after reports of two groups fighting in the road.

The disruption on Saturday was caused by a row between the occupants of two cars that pulled up at the traffic lights on the Pershore Road side of Abbey Bridge.

A witness to the flare-up said one man had a short wooden club, but did not appear to use it.

Three police cars arrived at the scene at about 5.10pm, and traffic was held up as officers quelled the disturbance. There were no arrests.

However, police do not believe it was a road rage incident, and said the groups in the two cars had a dispute, but it was not connected to their driving.

A police spokesman said: "The initial report was that it was a group of lads fighting. Officers have attended.

"There's been some sort of altercation gone on but no complaints were made by any party.

"Details were taken and they were sent on their way.

"A bat was found at the scene but it was unknown where it had come from and there was no reference to it being used.

"However officers took it away for disposal."

He added officers had to sort out the dispute before the cars could be moved which had led to the traffic queues.
