MORE than 1,000 people gathered to watch as twinkling Christmas lights were switched on at a garden centre.

Pupils from the Vale of Evesham School had the special job of counting down and switching-on the glittering lights at The Valley, in Evesham.

Adding to the festive atmosphere was singer Helen Pearson, who performed classic Christmas songs, and there was even an appearance from Father Christmas himself.

The evening also marked the launch of The Valley winter skating rink – which was free for everyone on the night.

Andrew Robinson, head of care at the Vale of Evesham School, said: "Being part of the community is an important part of what we do at the school, and the boarders loved being able to turn the lights on.

"Thank you to everybody at The Valley who made us feel welcome and for letting us be part of the evening."

Phil Maclean, marketing manager at The Valley, said: "We are so proud of the Vale of Evesham school, it was an obvious choice to invite them to perform the light switch-on, as they are all genuine stars.

"It was a magical evening, and we were delighted with the turnout. We had lots of positive feedback on the night from families enjoying the relaxed nature of the event."
