A VIBRANT poetry master class was enjoyed by all of the year 7 pupils at St Nicholas Middle School.

Pupils spent the day with the Birmingham Poet Laureate for 2006/7, Giovanni Esposito, known as Spoz, and found out about some of the best poetry slamming techniques, rapping their way through a day-long workshop.

The children worked in teams to write their own poems on the theme of “Our Generation”.

At the end of the day, there was a competition to find the best slam poem to represent the school at the Worcestershire Middle Schools Poetry Slam finals, a competition which is to take place in May at the Palace Theatre, Redditch.

Laura Smith, Acting Assistant Head for English, said of the competition: “The standard was stunning, it gets better every year.

"Our winning team of poets really shone as they showcased skills learnt during the day with Spoz.

"We look forward to them building on our previous successes at the finals!”

The day took place on Friday, January 6.
