GUESTS are invited to a jam-packed day of events to find out about a new learning and leisure project for people aged over 55.

The project, called BeSocial@GL54, will offer Winchcombe residents a variety of classes in subjects such as walking rugby, creative writing, art and pilates when it launches in April.

Once up and running, the scheme will operate from the Winchcombe Day Care Centre, in Langley Road.

An information day will take place in the town on Tuesday, January 31, offering anyone interested in taking part a taste of what will be on offer.

There will be half-hour demonstrations and talks by experienced tutors, who will explain what their classes will involve when the BeSocial project gets underway from its centre in Langley Road.

Carol Baker, manager of day care centre, said: "We are very excited at the launch of BeSocial@GL54.

"The day centre building is a wonderful resource and the launch of BeSocial@GL54 means it can be used for the benefit of the wider community, not just the elderly.

"We believe BeSocial@GL54 will appeal to local people from all walks of life who are interested in all kinds of leisure activities and learning opportunities.

"The day centre facilities are currently used only three days a week, so the other four days will be available for BeSocial@GL54 classes and events, including evening and weekends."

Vicky Weaver, deputy centre manager, said: "BeSocial@GL54 will be a place where you can meet like-minded people and develop your existing skills or learn new ones.

"If you’re a tutor or someone with specialist knowledge that you’d like to share with others, we’d also like to hear from you, or better still, come along to the information day yourself."

On the day, visitors can get involved with a game of carpet bowls, with a prize for the top-scorer.

There will also be stalls hosted by Telecare, the Village Agents, Carers Gloucestershire, Warm and Well, Severn Trent and Apetito - which is providing refreshments.

The information day runs from 10am to 2pm at Methodist Church and Halls, High Street, Winchcombe.

Popular tea dances were launched in the village by the BeSocial@GL54 project last year, and continue to run monthly.
