TEACHERS and schoolchildren have been competing to find out how many items they can squeeze into a matchbox.

The matchbox challenge saw pupils from the Pinvin Federation of schools come up with innovative ways to fill the boxes using pet hair, tiny electronic components and pine needles.

The federation brings together Pinvin CE First School and St Nicholas CE Middle School, also in Pinvin.

The eventual winner was Arran Budd who managed to fit 225 items into his matchbox.

The fundraising idea made £123 which will go towards helping fund a return visit from the headteacher of their link school, the Misufini B School in Morogoro, Tanzania.

Staff hope to fund the visa application, flights and living expenses for the visitor who the school believes will offer an insight for pupils on a different culture and environment.

The Tanzanian school has 220 children with only five classrooms, no electricity and no running water.

There are not enough desks for everyone and the children have to provide their own exercise books, pencils and pens, with very little else used in the way of teaching aids.

The school has also run fundraising discos, carol singing and Christmas Fayre stalls and has so far raised £1,358 for the visit in May 2017.

Anyone who wants to help with donations can contact the school's office.
