CHILDREN from Tibberton and Hindlip First Schools have interviewed a police officer to find out how to stay safe in different situations.

The 8 and 9 year olds spoke to Katie Hearden-Fellows for a radio programme on safety which will be played to younger children at the school.

The children asked the PC for her top tips on staying safe and asked her what they should do if they got lost.

She gave advice such as letting people know where you are going and if you are in a busy place, to find a ‘safe’ person – like a shopkeeper or police officer - to ask for help.

She also made the children aware of the dangers of playing ball games near roads.

The interview follows other work by the school this term on staying safe.

As well as undergoing pedestrian training, the children have also interviewed their parents and have created ‘car safety raps’ which will be included in the radio programme.

All the year 4 children at Hindlip and Tibberton First Schools have the chance to take part in the Radio Club and make radio programmes each half term on different themes.

The programmes can be listened to as podcasts on the Tibberton school website.

Alex Gromski, Tibberton First School head teacher, said: "It was such a privilege for the children to have the chance to quiz a police constable about the things that worry them.

"Katie was so friendly and made a really big impression on the children.

"They will remember the experience of recording her for many years to come.

"Now they can’t wait to play their interview to younger members of the school."
