COUNCIL officials visited a flood alleviation scheme to remember the damage caused by the 2007 floods.

Wychavon District Council also wished to mark the progress that has been made in the last decade.

Cllr. Emma Stokes, portfolio holder for environment and street scene, said: “Since the devastating floods of 2007, we have been working hard to ensure residents and businesses are better protected from flooding.

"We have done this through our support for flood alleviation schemes, encouraging landowners to clear ditches and by helping to co-ordinate flooding events to promote self protection measures.

“By working together we believe our district is now in a much better position to cope with flooding.

"However, we continue to prioritise flood alleviation in our everyday work and we will never forget the huge impact those floods had on our communities."

Wychavon staff worked around the clock in 2007 providing a rest centre for those stranded and unable to travel due to road closures.

The stories of bravery, shock and disbelief are still very much alive in their memories all these years on.

Wychavon later supported flooding victims in drying out their properties, in grant distribution and future flooding protection.

Cllr Stokes continued: "While our job to protect residents and businesses continues, we are certainly better prepared than ever before and by working together this can only continue."

Residents are invited to share their flooding photos and tales on Wychavon’s Facebook page.
