A BUS driver was assaulted on his bus when he tried to throw two men off the service.

The men were reported to have been drinking and swearing before he asked them to leave.

They threw their bus fare at the driver and allegedly punched him to the head before leaving the bus on foot.

The driver, a man in his 50s, was unhurt but police and paramedics were called to the Number 35 bus, which had just stopped at a bus stop in Lowesmoor.

A West Mercia Police spokesman said: "Police were called to reports of an assault that took place on a bus in the Lowesmoor area of Worcester around 7.15pm on Saturday night.

"Two men are reported to have boarded the bus close to the American Golf store as it travelled towards Rainbow Hill, before being involved in an altercation with the driver when they were asked to leave.

"The driver, a man in his 50s, is reported to have been punched during the incident, with the two men leaving on foot.

"The driver was uninjured as a result of the incident and police inquires are continuing.

"Anyone who witnessed the assault or has any information is asked to call police on 101, quoting incident number 693s of 19 August."

Sarah East, Head of Operations for First Worcester said: “One of our bus drivers was assaulted by two male passengers who boarded the bus at Lowesmoor on Saturday evening.

"The incident happened after our driver asked the passengers to leave the bus because they were allegedly swearing, drinking alcohol and had thrown their bus fare at the driver.

"There were a number of witnesses at the scene and the police and ambulance attended.

"A full investigation is being undertaken and we are helping the police with their enquiries."

The assault came just days after First Bus held a safety day at Crowngate bus station which offered guidance to passengers on how to stay safe.
