A MAN was robbed after telling his attackers that he did not have any cigarettes.

A man in his 50s was walking along Avon Street towards High Street at around 3.15am on Sunday when he was approached by two unknown men who asked him for a cigarette.

When the man told them he did not have any, one of the men assaulted the victim - causing him to fall to the floor.

The two men continued assaulting the man while he was on the floor before taking a quantity of cash and a key from him.

When a member of the public shouted out from a nearby window, the two men left in the direction of High Street. The victim suffered minor facial injuries.

The men are both described as being in their early 20s. One was of slim build with blond hair and the other was thought to be of a larger build with dark hair.

Enquiries are ongoing but officers are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area at the time.
