July is Littletons’ WI Open Meeting this year and we invited members from all other WIs in our Group to join us. This enables members to learn about our WI, to meet other WI members and generally socialise. There is also the chance to hear our speaker for the month and enjoy supper with us.

Following the singing of Jerusalem our President welcomed our guests and speaker, John Butterworth, and then dealt with a small amount of business mentioning in particular Evesham Vale Groups visit to Blists Hill and Coalbrookdale (to see the statutes of the suffragettes representing one hundred years since some women were given the right to vote). John then talked to the forty-three members about his life as a newspaper editor from his early days as a trainee reporter with the Daily Mirror training scheme, to visiting many far-flung countries including China, Nepal and Albania amongst others. He also ran his own paper for a time. He in turn helped to train many young journalists. He credited being a stamp collector in his younger days with giving him a broad knowledge of history and geography. Following his very interesting and entertaining talk we had time to speak to him and each other as well as enjoy the supper. John judged the competition “Make up a Headline (up to seven words) which was won by Annette Brown.

Our August meeting is deviating from the usual barbecue/garden party to a short boat trip and cream tea on the River Severn. Hopefully the weather continues to be almost as warm as it has been of late.
